The Professor and the Tasmanian Devil
UTAS is celebrating its special connection with the family of Hollywood movie star Errol Flynn in an exhibition of historic artefacts linked to the Flynn family.
Titled The Professor and the Tasmanian Devil, the exhibition at the Morris Miller Library is a triple celebration of the century of Biology at the University of Tasmania; UTAS’s first biology Professor, Theodore Thomson Flynn and his son, silver screen legend, Errol Flynn who was born a century ago on June 20.
The exhibition features photographs, tools, research papers, zoological specimens, skeletons, glass plate negatives and lantern slides belonging to and related to Prof. Flynn’s research.
An avid field researcher, the fossil whale and a Thylacine skull collected by Prof. Flynn and information relating to his trip on the Aurora to Macquarie Island are rare and valuable objects in the display.
And for the movie buffs, a collection of original Errol Flynn movie posters, photographs, books by and about Errol Flynn showcase the dashing and daring actor’s life.
Also included in the exhibition is the original registry of Errol Flynn’s birth at the Queen Alexandra Hospital, the Friends School register showing his enrolment there in 1920 and his exam results from Hobart High School.
The exhibition opening this week was attended by more than 70 people.
The exhibition at the Morris Miller Library will close at the end of August. Opening hours are Monday to Friday 8.30am – 6pm, Saturdays and Sundays 10am – 6pm (except during mid-year vacation, 27 June to 12 July, when the library will be closed on the weekend).
