Moss Mania exhibition
Tasmanian Mosses are the focus of the latest exhibition at the Morris Miller Library at the UTAS Sandy Bay campus.
Featuring the botanical artistry of Lauren Black and Rod Seppelt, the exhibition, titled Moss Mania, is part of this year’s celebration of 100 years of Biology at the University of Tasmania .
Originally from South Australia, Rod Seppelt moved to Tasmania in 1981 to take up a position at the Australian Antarctic Division.
Seppelt is an expert in representing the tiny 1-2mm tall plants in stunningly detailed artworks and he is in high demand for illustrating moss flora in Australia and overseas. He is currently completing the illustrations for the entire species of the moss family Pottiaceae for the Moss Flora of News Zealand.
The moss artworks are initially prepared from microscope observations and drawings. The final artwork is done in Indian ink on polyester film.
Freelance botanical artist and teacher, Lauren Black’s work is held in numerous Australian and overseas collections, including that of HRH Crown Prince and Princess of Denmark.
Black studied the specialist field of botanical art at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne and been commissioned to do work for botanists, artists, universities, and community and government organisations.
In 2004 she was the winner of the inaugural Margaret Flockton Award for excellence in botanical illustration, NSW.
Moss Mania will remain on display until the end of the year.
