HECS-free study for visual and performing arts school teachers

Scholarships to cover HECS course fees are being offered to registered visual and performing arts school teachers in Tasmania to study a Master of Contemporary Arts (MCA) at the University of Tasmania in 2010.

The MCA is a three-semester Masters coursework program at the UTAS School of Visual and Performing Arts, which can be undertaken in full or part-time modes.

The program includes various studio, research or professional project unit configurations and an opportunity to develop research and studio projects in consultation with UTAS staff.

One-semester professional workplace projects can also be undertaken in agreement with a host organisation as a significant component of the Masters.

Students are also able to commence the course in either semester.

Department of Education and independent school staff who are registered visual and performing arts teachers in Tasmania and who enrol in the MCA will have access to full HECS scholarships, which means all units studied for the MCA are HECS-free.

MCA co-ordinator, Dr Wayne Hudson, said that in recent years a number of Tasmanian visual and performing arts practitioners and teachers pursue further study with the University through the MCA program.

“They have found it to be thoroughly rewarding either for personal development or as a career enhancing experience,” Dr Hudson said.

An outline of the MCA program is available online at http://www.acadarts.utas.edu.au/?q=node/25

Dr Hudson and Associate Professor Michael Beresford will hold a MCA information session on Thursday, 19 November, 2009 at the Salamanca Arts Centre meeting room between 5-6pm.  Light snacks will be provided afterwards at the Tricycle café at the Peacock Theatre, Salamanca Place.
